ULI COMPETITION: NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
The Trax is a tribute to the undeniable power of the railroad, and its ability to connect water to water, trade to trade, and people to people. Stationed between the distinguished Park Circle and Riverfront Park, this development is a circuit of new and old technologies that has the ability to build and sustain itself all in one site. Offering specialized education, affordable housing, and a prominent streetcar system, the Trax is the apex of neighborhood vitality.
The Trax is designed to handle heavy rainfall and flooding year-round. By utilizing permeable surfaces and green roofs, this development has several methods of allowing water to circulate the site and move back into the Cooper River. Along the south and east waterfront, the site plan calls for a serpentine retention wall with steps that can be used for walking or viewing the riverfront park. The plan preserves the marsh that already exists and utilizes it as a ‘sponge’ to soak in water before the retention wall.
All work was completed and submitted in conjunction with Alex Viox, Ben Paulus, Jacob Bernans, and Alexus Wimbish.
